Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
