In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
