British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
