2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Follows Poor Response

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete content from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to mind and revamped the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our audience.

The trust in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having spent the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all eager to keep witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is yours."

Project Ethos lacks an confirmed release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as creation continues.
